Year 6 carried on their cooking sessions today looking at seasonal fruit, in particular windfall fruit like apple, plums, damson and pears that can be found all over the ground at the beginning of Autumn. Mrs Cawdell had brought them in some HUGE cooking apples and pears that she picked up from her garden from which we decided to make apple and pear crumble with custard. They started off by peeling and stewing down the fruit with a little bit of sugar to stop it tasting too bitter. As the peelers, choppers and stewers where hard at work, another group prepared the crumble topping from flour, oats (for extra crunch) butter and sugar, rubbing the mixture in between their fingers until it was perfectly crumbly.
Once the stewed apple and crumble mixture was ready they made the crumble and placed it in the oven to cook. Whilst the crumble cooked they made their own custard from milk, cream, egg yolks, sugar and vanilla essence, stirring the custard constantly until it thickened into a lovely, creamy consistency.
Once the custard was ready and the crumble was cooked, there was really only one thing left to do....eat it!
