READING FOR MEANING

Within their phonics lessons, EYFS and KS1 develop their comprehension skills through shared reading and re-reading of texts. Specific talk about opportunities are also planned in weekly to allow them to practise the skills of retrieval and inference. In KS2, guided reading sessions are planned.

These reading sessions use age-appropriate books from a range of genres that are selected based on gaps identified in children’s PIRA reading assessments. The key skills developed in guided reading sessions are retrieval, prediction, inference, summarising, sequencing and vocabulary. These skills are taught in the context of the text whilst continuing to prioritise fluency.
